Unexpected travel costs and how to avoid them

Prtljaga

We have all surely found ourselves in a situation where we had to pay additional unexpected costs during a trip, regardless of whether you are travelling abroad or in your own country. When it comes to finances, the most important thing you have to do before a trip is make a good plan. We have prepared a few of the most common problems that you may encounter during a trip, and a few solutions that will help you avoid them.

BAGGAGE FEES

Every airline has their own rules related to the amount of luggage you can carry onto a flight. Sometimes these rules can be very confusing, and therefore, we can find ourselves in a situation where we have to pay additional fees due to an overly heavy luggage before boarding. To avoid this, we suggest that you carefully read all of your flight details before you buy your tickets and go on your trip.

EXCHANGE OFFICES

When you travel outside of Croatia, you will surely have to exchange your kuna into euros or some other currency. You can do this before your trip or when you arrive, but something you must take note of is the exchange rates that exchange offices offer. In this case, the key is to find places where you can exchange your money and find the most favourable exchange rate. When it comes to credit cards, check with your bank about any terms that apply when paying in different currencies.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT AND OTHER

If you are travelling to a bigger city, you will surely find yourself in a situation where you will have to use public transport. Public transportation can be your best friend when you have to travel from one side of the city to the other, but sometimes public transport tickets can be too expensive for tourists. Although sometimes even more expensive, other alternatives like taxi or Uber are also an option. Therefore, before leaving for your trip, it would be good to familiarise yourself with how public transport works.

ROAMING FEES

Even though the prices of phone providers in the EU are mostly similar to ensure consumer protection, oftentimes phone services outside of one’s home country are charged differently. Before travelling to a foreign country, contact your phone provider and ask about additional offers regarding roaming. Whenever and wherever possible, use free Wi-Fi, and when you are making your way through the city, carefully use your mobile data.

MEDICAL EXPENSES

Hopefully you will never find yourself in this situation, but unfortunately it is possible that you will need some form of medical assistance in a foreign country. These expenses can often be very high, so before your trip, you should enquire about different types of insurance in these specific cases. For EU trips, a European Health Insurance Card is enough.

TRIP CANCELLATION

Considering the uncertainty of the current times, it is possible that for some reason you will have to cancel your trip. Many airline companies and renters often offer the option to cancel. Make sure to find how and under which conditions you can cancel your flight and accommodation.
